Okt 2002.
verhaal.
Last
week a strange object appeared in the harbour in front of my studio. It
was a part of a passenger ship but it looked really odd. It turned out
to be intended for lengthening and modernising the cruiseship Costa Classica.
Because the ships owner anulled the deal the english ship yard Cammell
Laird went
bankrupt, after which this midsection was sold for breaking. Last monday
(30 sept 02), a group of artists inspected the object together with one
of the new owners.(see below)
On this page, my intention is to gather as much information as possible
on this subject. I am also going to document works of art that share a
connection to this story.

bouw kostte ruim 70 miljoen euro.

NEWLY
BUILT, BUT ALREADY SCRAPPED
In the Rotterdam port a new segment of a cruiseship lies ready for scrapping.
The fifteen story high segment was recently built in Great brittain for
an italian shipping firm. It cost more than 70 milion euro's to build.
The 6500 ton heavy giant, with 350 huts, a sundeck and a shopping promenade,
an existing ship, the Costa Classica, was to be lengthened.Because of
problems at the yard in Liverpool the extension was delayed, causing the
Italians to back out of the deal. The segment became superfluous and the
shipyard went bankrupt. The segment will be stripped in Rotterdam for
reuse. Furniture and inventory were sold to a themepark.

READY FOR DEMOLITION
In the port of Rotterdam lies a new segment for a cruiseship ready for

R O T T E R D A M
Hardly an everyday scene in the port of Rotterdam today. On top of a barge,
pulled by tug boats, the midsection of a cruiseship has entered the harbour.
It originates from the inventory of a bankrupt shipyard in the english
Birkinhead. The midsection (44meters high, 40meters long and 32meters
wide) was intended for lengthening an existing cruiseship. The new owners,
the Rotterdam crane company Hapo and entrepreneurs H. van der Most and
S. Soenen, want to dismantle the midsection: van der Most, who surprised
everybody earlier by converting a former nuclear plant in the german town
of Kalkar into an recreational resort Kernwasserwunderland, wants to use
the inventory for new hotel projects. The fourteen story high midsection
holds 457 hotelrooms with complete sanitation modules. Hapo and the Belgian
entrepreneur Soenen are interested in the steel and engines.

Guys, really.. the section was scrapped and could not have been part of
any out of court settlement. I saw it come apart bit by bit untill only
the lower three decks remained. After that it was taken elsewhere to take
out the engines.

I was looking for references to costa on net today when I came upon your
site. I had just taken over as tech manager in lairds (on structural side)
when costa deal fell through and was very interested to see your site.
Curious if David Roberts below is the same David Roberts who was my boss
and technical director in Lairds. I am now working as structural designer
in Glasgow. If you are interested I can send an image I rendered in Lightwave
of proposed Swimming pool and lido area. SAd it never got any sun worshippers.

Gentlemen, Are any of the elevator components such as hoisting machines,
control cabinets etc. etc. salvaged? Four (4)new elevators was installed
in the new section and 8 new control cabinets was delivered for installation
to the existing elevators in the Costsa Classica. These are large red
colored control cabinets. We are interested to purchase some of this equipment,
if available. Looking forward to hear from you.

hi i am an architecture student from london working on a project near
the RDM drydock complex i am interested in your intended work with the
shipsection, and i would like to visit your exhibition was wondering if
u can provide me more details regarding it cheers nc
Re: Ron van der Ende :Mon, 17 Feb 2003 17:44:18
Hi Tiah, I presume you are refering to my own work with the shipsection.
It is a relief measuring 185x195x16cm (so almost flat). It is constructed
as a wood mosaic. The old original paint layers on the wood provide the
colors (so i don't paint them myself). It's almost finished (perhaps a
week or ten days more ). I'll send you a photo, as soon as i have one
that's pretty decent. I'm not sure when it will be exhibited. It will
be in my own gallery (Delta) in Rotterdam in mai or june. I'm also hoping
for an exhibition with more works concerning the shipsection. Possibly
(hopefully) also in Liverpool. If you visit Rotterdam in the near future
you could also visit my studio. (On the former RDM drydock site, 'Heijsehaven',
harbournr. 2620).
Just out of curiosity ... What is the nature of your project near the
RDM ? And how did you find me ?

text/writings as a medium to generate architecture i was also studying
the use of different sections coming together to construct space (a technique
used in shipbuilding) i surfing the web for info on shipsection and was
stunned to find a community of artist working on a shipsection on the
RDM site!! i am actually in delft now for a week and really hope to be

Hello Ron, Thanks for the up date - I am sure the
mid section is jinxed! It must have been really scary seeing a million
ton of metal moving towards you all at full speed. Did you know that a
man was killed whilst working on the mid section just before it left for
Rotterdam. Horrible! Anyway I look forward to receiving your master plan
Take care
Kindest regards

Yesterday (the 27th) there was a big storm here,
the same as in Wales. The shipsection sitting on a great barge outside
our studio broke loose from one of the great bolders in the middle of
the harbour (breaking a 1.5 inch steel cable!) and came crashing into
the quay. Later, when they tried to secure it with three tugboats, things
got realy dodgy. They lost control for a while and the thing started floating
towards our studio. Our studiobuilding is standing on concrete poles over
the water. Luckely they stopped it in time. There is a definite possibility
the whole building would have collapsed if it were hit by something that
big and heavy. Liesbeth has got the whole thing on video ! (webcam quality,
but still)
You'll hear from me next week.
